What is dangerous shortness of breath?
Shortness of breath (dyspnea) can have many causes, but in cardiac patients it may signal heart failure, myocardial ischemia, arrhythmia, or pulmonary embolism.
Warning features
- Sudden onset at rest
- Waking from sleep with choking or orthopnea
- Associated chest pain, cold sweat, or syncope
- Rapid progression over hours or days
- New or worsening dyspnea after a heart attack, stent, or known heart failure
What to do
Severe or sudden dyspnea requires emergency care. Persistent milder dyspnea still needs prompt cardiology assessment.
